Kentucky justice officials are considering a move toward tracking inmates under home incarceration by satellite monitoring. The legislature expanded the state's law on electronic monitoring this past winter to allow technological advances.
Currently land line phones are used to see if an inmate is at home. The use of a global positioning device would provide real time tracking. Justice Secretary Michael Brown says it would enhance public safety by allowing for the creation of zones which are off limits to an inmate.
Currently 226 people are under home incarceration, 175 of whom are inmates and 51 who are out on parole. Corrections officials are prepared to begin switching to the satellite tracking next month.
