Federal Funds Getting Flushed into Lexington’s Worst Pump Station
Monday, 18 August 2008 12:32

The South Elkhorn Pump Station is one of Lexington’s worst offenders when it comes to overflows during rainy seasons.

The E.P.A. got involved several years ago due to the pollution the pump station has been pumping into a nearby creek for years, and now Lexington is on a deadline set by the E.P.A. to fix it.

The $18 million project is just the first part of several infrastructure upgrades.

Rate payers are paying for it and several other projects through a sewer rate increase, but Monday morning, Congressman Ben Chandler dropped off a $1.18 in federal funds that will be earmarked for the renovation of the facility off Old Harrodsburg Road.

“The money is a proactive step in the right direction toward fixing our systems and protecting the environment in Fayette County, Jessamine County and other areas of Central Kentucky” Chandler said.

Work is expected to begin on the sewer line around September, and work on the pump station is expected to begin sometime in early spring of 2009.

When the pump station is complete it will be able to pump at least 14,000,000 gallons a day, nearly double the 8,000,000 gallons a day it pumps now.
