Sky Conditions Should Allow for Perseid Meteor Shower Viewing

Mostly clear skies across east Kentucky tonight will provide a good opportunity for viewing the Perseid meteor shower. Although the meteor shower peaks predawn on Tuesday, meteors will be visible tonight through Wednesday night. The meteor shower is an annual event, as debris coming from the comet Swift-Tuttle is ejected toward the earth.

The meteor shower can be seen starting mid July each year, however the greatest activity occurs between August 8 and 14, peaking around August 12th. During the peak of the event, the rate of meteors seen reaches as high as 60 or more per hour.

The Perseid meteor shower gets its name from where the meteors appear to originate, the constellation Perseus. The picture below shows where to look in reference to constellations.
